Jennifer: Thanks for a pleasant evening, Armand.

Armand: It was my pleasure, Jen. I was prepared to spend the night feeling sorry for myself now that Tara’s gone.

J: Yes, it certainly made a nice change from my plans too. I haven’t given too much thought to being alone when Lucy goes off, but now that it’s almost staring me in the face, I’d best prepare myself.

A: Maybe we can help each other out – be there for each other?

J: [strokes his cheek] I like the sound of that.

Armand: So, in retrospect I thought I’d be married again by now, but it’s like Tara said, I barked up the wrong tree for a long time. I’m kind of at a loss as a result.

Jennifer: You really want to be married?

A: Yeah, I do. Especially now that Tara’s left home. How about you?

J: Fortunately for me, my divorce hasn’t poisoned me against getting married again, either. To a man, not just my job by the way. It would be nice.

Armand: How’s the soup?

Jennifer: Lovely! You’re a good cook, Armand. I find it a chore, personally.

A: I’m worried that I’m going to bother less now that it’s just me.

J: You’re taking it hard aren’t you, Tara being in college?

A: It’s a lot of house for just me. But hey, Rudy’s going to be good company.

J: Dogs are great, but you need a wife. Everyone in the office can’t believe you’re not married, considering what a catch you are.

Armand had just let Rudy out to relieve himself when a rap sounded on the front door. He went to it and saw Jennifer Burb there, her toned arms bare and covered in gooseflesh. She was dressed like she’d come straight from the office, despite it being after 8pm.

“Jennifer, hi,” he said, opening the door to her.

She walked in, rubbing her arms. “Hi Armand. I’m sorry to disrupt you on a Friday night, but I was wondering if you had signed those contracts I asked you for urgently? I’m afraid I need them before Monday.”

“Oh…” why else would she be coming over, you idiot? he wondered. “I do, they’re in my study.”

“Thank you,” she said.

He turned to get them, but stopped himself. “Hey, it’s real cold out there, and I have soup simmering on the stove. Would you like to stay and eat?”

Her mouth made an awkward twitch. “Well, sure, why not? Lucy’s at her dad’s overnight, and honestly I was planning on going home, making a grilled cheese and reading over those contracts in my pajamas.”

“Sounds like a blast.”

She laughed elegantly at his sarcasm, and his insides flip-flopped a little bit.
